To think. it was as simple as less then 1% chrome in a good base…. All that work and leaching for it all to turn in to such a simple recipe.</image:caption>

I have been working with this type of glaze for a long time (oxidation iron reds, not bismuth) My theory is that iron reds are just crystal glazes in disguise. See the little clumps of dots? <image:caption>Look closer. You see that?! See the little crazing! I have used this glaze on this clay body before and it has never crazed like this. The problem with crazing is that it’s insidious. You would have never known adding a little bismuth changed the thermal expansion so slightly that is caused crazing because the color of the glaze itself is in the way. You need to look very very close to even know it’s there. This is less of a problem with bismuth and more of a warning. Do not just add 2-4% bismuth by weight and assume it’s all good. It will change things and you ought to note these changes closely.</image:caption>

<image:title>Earth Nation Blog - New glaze (Greymon V.2) - Greymon V.2 on IMCO porcelain (carved) The main thing that seems to change with application here is the amount of yellow. If the temp it a little higher the yellow decomposes. This means any holds or slow cools will get you less yellow. You can also control that with application though.</image:title>

<image:caption>The tile on the left is the new batch while the right is the cracked batch that had Epsom salt solution and Darvan 7. I even raised the specific gravity up by 0.1 (which is that I wanted to test in the first place) All I wanted was a way to test Red lotus or Ancient greymon at 1.5 specific gravity…. of course were still going to fire all of these tests. One thing I have learned though, If the viscosity of a glaze or application is too high the glaze cracks. There seems to be a correlation between these cracks and crawling. I do not think one causes the other, but its’ not helping it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Earth Nation Blog - Why specific gravity is so important to your glaze. Example. - This is Donte’s Greymon. A cone 6 oxidation phase separation glaze.</image:title>
<image:caption>This glaze is sensitive in that it gets much better color when held at 1800f for 30 min or so and must be a thick application at 1.4 S.G (specific gravity)or around that number. As long as you do the slow cool and use the right S.G it'll work. p.s Do not go below 1.3 S.G if you try this glaze Here is the problem. Most new people who come across recipes mix them with a random amount of water and what people call “the finger test”. They make a glaze and dip their finger in the glaze to see if they can see their hand texture through the glaze. If so it’s thick enough for them. This is Thinking……. A trash way to measure S.G a and viscosity .'; it will only get you so far. If you use S.G and treat the glaze correctly you can get great consistent results from glazes that others swear don't work. Glaze recipes in books you have tried before will have a higher percentage of working and life becomes easier. Here. Let me show you.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This was the test where I took the Silica and alumina lower than….. I should have. You can see some crystals in the middle but I clearly went too far. The next step is to increase the amount of Silica ( for the thermal expansion) to lock in the crazing and add a little more iron . I think We will have I by the next test. You can see a good amount of crystals in just the right way I want them in the middle. Our next goal is to make the glaze look like that all over while getting rid of this crazing.</image:caption>

<image:title>Earth Nation Blog - Why Water should be treated as an ingredient in glaze composition. - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a picture of one of my oxidation red recipes called “ Ancient Greymon”. These are the same clay body, same kiln load, both dipped in the glaze for 3 seconds. Notice the one on the left has 200 ml written on the tile, That's right, One batch of this glaze (around 100 grams) has 200 ml of water. The tile on the left has a standard 150 ml of water in the glaze. The tile on the left, while treated and glazed the same way, has much more water in comparison to the minerals. Notice how much less mineral and color we get as a consequence. This is purely a result of the amount of mineral that coated the tile in comparison to the water it was suspended in. Usually potters would call this specific gravity but regardless of S.G you should always keep track of the mount of water in your glazes and recipes you make. Every glaze is different, there is no one amount of water one must put into all glazes. But if you want consistency it is best you treat water like an ingredient and start keeping the ml per 100g amount in your notes. Doing this will eventually lead you to the concept of Specific gravity: the ratio of the density of a substance compared to the density of another substance (Usually water) . Its kind of like asking “What is the density of my minerals vs the water it’s floating in?” Which is a great question and honestly what you are doing. The tile on the right had a higher density of minerals int he glaze vs the water than the tile on the left. Which is why it received better color overall. This is a great place to start and a powerful tool in the fight for glaze consistency in your practice, and while it’s not the while story, keeping track of the water amount in your glazes is a prime first step. P.S A horrid mistake in the glaze world is to write down a glaze recipe or try one from a book without paying attention to or writing down the amount of water that ought to be used in the glaze. If it is your own creation you can write down your preference and keep notes for consistency. But never give out a recipe without AT LEAST giving an amount of water that ought to be used for the recipe per batch. Any glaze book that does not have this metric is trash.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Glaze recipes are usually broken down by grams. If you went to the supply shop and bought 100 Grams of silica you’d weight 22 grams out on a grame scale and so on untill the recipe is complete. The base glaze ( the glaze mostly without color) adds up to 100% (most of the time) The Things after that initial 100% are usually what make color. Glazes will almost always follow this format.110% of a glaze. 100% for the glaze and 10% for the color.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Donte’s base glaze with 8% black iron oxide + 1% black nickel oxide. This could honestly be a glaze on it’s own. While its not what were going for I’ll keep this in my back pocket. This could be a seaweed tenmoku type beat. At this point I am aware the my base glaze has a silica to alumina ratio of 10-11 : 1 so it’s obviously going to come out clear and not matt.</image:caption>

<image:title>Earth Nation Blog - New glaze in development (Garurumon Line) - The best result so far</image:title>
<image:caption>The best result so far has been this porcelain bowl with the final version of the glaze in this line. 8% black iron ox and 3% black nickel oxide. A very thick application of the glaze was rolled into the bowl and fired. Keep in mind this is one glaze. This is a banger.i think if I reduce the nickel to 2 or 2.5% and increase the temp to cone 6 I can make this happen every time, making a new glaze. What's more is the flux ratio is almost 03:07 and as long as it has no leaking problems in testing I think it’ll make a gret glaze.</image:caption>

<image:title>Earth Nation Blog - A (very) basic understanding of glaze and glaze running. - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>This is my public base glaze recipe. The minerals needed are measured by percentages and weight. 1 bach of glaze is generally 100% or 100 grams. So I would go to the store and buy 1lb of silica 325( 325 is the mesh / size). I would then get a gram scale and put 22 grams of silica in a container. I would do this for every mineral; Frit 3134, om4 ball clay, and so on. By the end of this process you should have a layer of mineral in a container.</image:caption>

<image:caption>It should look like this. Don't worry about that yellow stuff on the top, that's what makes the color. Were just talking about the base glaze. Usually the color is added to the base, I.E past the initial 100g batch or past 100%. After this we mix in the water.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This means The foot of your pot just be cleaned up the pot a little bit in anticipation of the glaze moving down and touching the kiln shelf. Even your ceramic bowls at home have this. This amount of space we leave for the glaze to run is often called " clearance"</image:caption>

<image:title>Earth Nation Blog - A (very) basic understanding of glaze and glaze running. - Wax resist</image:title>
<image:caption>Wax resist created a protective layer of wax keeping the glaze from absorbing into the ceramic pot. Many potters will line the bottom of their pots or feet with this substance before dipping the in tired pot making clean up much easier than if it had not been lined with the wax. WARNING: Wax resist will not stay on the pot after about 200f in the kiln. It will not stop your pots from running. You still need to leave adequate space for glaze to run. Wax resist burns off far before the glaze ever starts to run. I cannot say this more clearly IT WILL NOT SAVE YOUR POTS FROM RUNNING, YOU MUST STILL LEAVE SPACE. IT IS FOR APPLICATION USE ONLY. It only keeps glaze for absorbing into the pot where it is applied.</image:caption>

<image:title>Earth Nation Blog - A (very) basic understanding of glaze and glaze running. - Advancer kiln shelves.</image:title>
<image:caption>The last line of defence for the average potter. Most kiln shelves are made of a substance called Cordierite. Cordierite is technically pours to a degree and will absorb / keep glaze if it runs onto it. Advancer shelves are made of (I could be wrong here) Silicon carbide. This material makes it far easier to clear glazes that have run onto the kiln shelf. Keep in mind while this does make clean up easier it does not keep your pots from running nor will it save the work.</image:caption>

<image:title>Earth Nation Blog - Just before dawn. A.C - This is the stull chart</image:title>
<image:caption>The left y axis denotes how much alumina The right x axis denotes how much silica When you put a recipe into a calculator this will map where you end up on this chart and give you a ration of how much alumina to silica your recipe has in it. This ratio is almost always ?:1 (the 1 being alumina) For example 11:1 is 11 silica (really is groups of silica calles “moles” to every 1 alumina. Alumina is very hard to melt. It melts somewhere above 5,000f . So usually we have much more silica to alumina. The more silica in a glaze usually the more glossy is ends up being an visa versa.</image:caption>

<image:title>Earth Nation Blog - Strong arming zinc (It didn't work) - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a high alumina / Matt base I made with no zinc. Essentially just iron and an alumina base. Fired at cone 6 ox on a b-mix test tile. It has 0.39 Al2O3 1.69 SiO2 Note: there will almost always be less alumina than silica in a recipe because alumina is so hard to melt in comparison to silica. So the Molar amounts of Alumina in a usual recipe will be something like 0.25 Al203 (Alumina) with something like 2.0 Si02 (Silica). The more Alumina, the more Matt a glaze will usually be in ratio to the silica. This is high in the alumina level. For example the recipe has 28% Epk (a good alumina supplier to a recipe) and 8% silica.</image:caption>

<image:title>Earth Nation Blog - Strong arming zinc (It didn't work) - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Crystal glazes often have far less alumina and silica than the normal glaze. For example this tester crystal glaze has 0.05 Al2O3 1.75 SiO2 See how much alumina is in this crystal glaze vs the Matt glaze from before? The little bursts of “crystals” your seeing in the glaze are really just bursts of zinc made easily seen by the low amounts of silica and alumina. This glaze has 22% Zinc oxide in it. I wanted to see if I could strong arm these little bursts of crystals by dumping a line test of zinc in the original matt glaze recipe above.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Same base recipe but with 8% zinc ox. Fired at cone 6 oxidation on a b-mix test tile. The interesting part here is from 3 to 8% the color getting more white is very obvious. You can see the zinc making a shield of white to block out color where it’s not making color. Most of the time putting a high level of zinc (not that this is) in low alumina glazes would result in some type of crystal formation. But here its just blocking out any color.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e044726bada7c55a6d8e2f0/cdc3bc2c-1c3d-43ae-9fa5-5cdbf2d66f28/IMG_20240611_091311.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Earth Nation Blog - Strong arming zinc (It didn't work) - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Now here is the kicker - Same glaze with 15% zinc. b-mix with grog test tile fired at cone 6 ox Same base glaze but with 15% zinc ox. Look at the difference between the first and last tile. All from zinc. You can see the zinc on the top of the glaze resulting in the color quality. Just….. deflecting the crap out of any light like a shot gun. You can see instead of the Zinc being exposed to enough heat to burst into little crystals it just melts into the glaze making an opaque coat and diminishing color along the way.</image:caption>

<image:title>Earth Nation Blog - Efficaincy of glaze. Perfect example. - This glaze has a whopping 8% lithium in it!!!!. It was developed from a glaze I just threw together while playing with amounts of Mg0 and Ca0.Tha’s wayyyyyy too much lithium. I don’t know how o test for lithium limits outside of a leechability but I'm sure it wouldn't pass the test. And this is my second test. Technicallty there is some Boron in here to a very small amount. I took silica out of the original recipe. The alumina and silica molar amounts here (when put into the UMF) are 0.22 alumina 2.03 silica</image:title>
<image:caption>The glaze looks amazing but it’s too much lithium. It’s costly and inefficient. We start our tests here with 8% lithium.</image:caption>

<image:title>Earth Nation Blog - Efficaincy of glaze. Perfect example. - Van gilders Tenmoku for cone 6 ox has 4% lithium carb. 0.23 Al2O3 2.29 SiO2 A little too much silica. The test turned mostly brown and this is one of the more realistic goo pictures I found on glazy. The recipe from my previous test has less silica and more Lithium.the goal now is to see how low we can get the silica to make lithium and the other fluxes to more work with a lighter load.</image:title>

<image:title>Earth Nation Blog - Efficaincy of glaze. Perfect example. - This is my glaze reformulated to use less lithium , 4 % in total) by reducing the work load of the glaze by reducing the amount of alumina and silica to levels below .2 (alumina) and 2.0 (silica) 0.17 Al2O3 1.76 SiO2</image:title>
<image:caption>Immediate success. With the same amount of Lithium as the original recipe I was about to reduce the amount of lithium carb I put into the recipe making the glaze melt at a lower temperature by taking out amounts of alumina and silica. My test is much more red and has way better crystal formation with near the same molar amounts of my previous glaze recipe and van gilders.</image:caption>

<image:title>Earth Nation Blog - Efficaincy of glaze. Perfect example. - Of course we have to make sure it’s repeatable. This is test #4 in my line of tests (I did about 8). This time the base recipe had 5% lithium instead of 4% like the last test but the amount of boron was increase to 0.13 molar amount. The other tests (the first picture in this blog) only has 0.4) Boron acts as both a glass former and flux (although it’s not as powerful as dumping lithium carb in) 0.17 Al2O3 1.71 SiO2</image:title>
<image:caption>Look at that color. More Boron, less silica, 1 more gram of lithium and we have quite a good glaze here.</image:caption>

<image:title>Earth Nation Blog - Efficaincy of glaze. Perfect example. - The test here has 1% lithium (we need a base line for lithium carb) 0.22 Al2O3 2.56 SiO2</image:title>

<image:title>Earth Nation Blog - Efficaincy of glaze. Perfect example. - Same recipe with 5% lithium carb. On frost porcelain.</image:title>
<image:caption>0.22 Al2O3 2.56Si02 Look how much harder the glaze has to work even with 5% lithium (which I still think is too much) just to get a little red and crystalization. I kept the water amounts all between 110 - 120 ml of water. I use Sacramento tap water, it’s the alumina and silica that’s making the glaze work so hard to melt at all if not at the proper cone.</image:caption>

<image:title>Earth Nation Blog - Efficaincy of glaze. Perfect example. - This is the same glaze as on the porcelain cup above but double dipped from the top half up on a b-mix test tile. p.s: I don’t know how many people follow my work but if you continue to do so remember I almost always dip my tiles once, wait 10 seconds, the dip it again but only the top half. So your seeing less layers on the bottom then the top. This is only for the upright test tiles, not for cups, bowls, functional product.</image:title>
<image:caption>Look how hard it makes the glaze work to produce a good layer of red. Keep in mind this is in direct sunlight so it looks a little more brown in person.</image:caption>

<image:title>Earth Nation Blog - How to make a good Iron saturated red in cone 6 oxidation. I've done it. - Everything from a lithium to a zinc, Mg0, and Ca0 line test happned here. I used black iron oxide, yellow iron oxide, crocus martis , I tried everything. Almost another 30 tests in total.</image:title>
      <image:caption>All brown.</image:caption>

<image:title>Earth Nation Blog - How to make a good Iron saturated red in cone 6 oxidation. I've done it. - Because I had a hunch that the cone 6 original recipe had boron in it I took one of my old recipes and put 0.04 molar amount of boron in it. I know that .12 is usually what you need to make a glaze a cone 6 glaze but I thought the amount of lithium and Boron would somehow combine? I have no proof of theat, it’s just a guess.</image:title>
<image:caption>The Mg0 levels are above 0.3 Here . Finally I'm getting some red. From here I did a lithium line test.</image:caption>

<image:title>Earth Nation Blog - How to make a good Iron saturated red in cone 6 oxidation. I've done it. - Got it. Took the base recipe. Moved some stuff around for boron. Added 2% lithium and got it. This is what we wanted, why did I ever listen to that article.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Add more lithium</image:caption>

<image:title>Earth Nation Blog - How to make a good Iron saturated red in cone 6 oxidation. I've done it. - Added 4% lithium. At this point the levels of lithium are way too high but we have it. We have a good candidate for ancient copper.</image:title>
<image:caption>The next experiment is to see if I can replace the melting power of lithium with boron. The levels of boron in ere are 0.04 molar amounts. The next test will be lower lithium and higher boron.</image:caption>

<image:title>Earth Nation Blog - How to make a good Iron saturated red in cone 6 oxidation. I've done it. - Last test This one as 0.13 lithium and 4% lithium. The original recipe has a little lithium in it in the first place. Te increase line tests are more so.</image:title>

<image:title>Earth Nation Blog - How to make a good Iron saturated red in cone 6 oxidation. I've done it. - 1% more lithium (7% now)</image:title>

<image:caption>This test tile (as are almost of my test tiles) is dipped twice. The first dip is all the way down while the second is about half way down to simulate what the glaze would look like if it were either thicker or double dipped. If I get better color this often means I should decrease the amount of water in the recipe. Notice the blue hues while I added no contact or anything of the sort.</image:caption>

<image:caption>- Back of test tile- Notice the hues of blue I'm getting just from 2-3% of the glaze. I forget how much work iron truly does in a glaze. Iron, in the right amounts, can make anywhere from green to blue to red, yellow, and so on.</image:caption>
